“London is a captivating place to be. I’m pleased that the Moon Festival team are raising the profile of our city at night and encouraging Londoners to get outside, meet one another and take time to appreciate the natural beauty of the moon.”
London Night Czar, Amy Lamé

Museums have lates. Cultural institutions have lates. And boroughs, especially in a city like London where on each given night over 1.6 million people work and 1 million enjoy cultural activities, should have their own lates too.

And so on July 19th we’re launching the first ever #WoolwichLate and inviting London to 9 hours of moon themed uninterrupted culture at night in partnership with Royal Greenwich, Visit Greenwich, the people of Woolwich and a host of other creative organisations and partners. Taking place in public spaces and theatres, libraries and cafés, welcome to our inaugural #WoolwichLate programme.

EYE OF THE NIGHT

Storytelling with Laura Sampson and Sam Enthoven

11 PM – 1 AM

What would happen if the moon disappeared forever? How would a moon-dweller live in the human world? Is it on the moon’s dark side that lost things hide, or in its blazing eye? The Moon and its cycles have birthed a dizzying universe of stories in every world culture since the dawn of time. It’s a symbol of wisdom, a bringer of madness, a deity and also a home to deities: moon myth teems with celestial rabbits, shapeshifting maidens, shining palaces and underground cities. As Earth’s original satellite it’s the perfect place from which strange beings can descend to us – or, maybe, simply watch our every move. Join storyteller Laura Sampson and sound artist Sam Enthoven on a voyage around the moon and its folklore, set to the unique and uncanny sound of the Theremin – an instrument whose music has literally been to the moon and back. Run in partnership with Woolwich Centre Library.
